Raleigh man signs first record deal at 74
Musician refused to give up on his dreams

RALEIGH – When William Burton first started singing and playing the guitar, he was told he was “ahead of his time.” Now, some 40 years later, he is a man whose time has come.
At 74, Burton has signed his first record deal.
Burton said he was performing at the North Carolina Seafood Festival at the state fairgrounds a couple of years ago when author and publisher Sandra Carrington-Smith, of
Crossroads Books and Entertainment, heard him and liked his sound. He said she called him six months later and offered to sign him. Songs from his CD, Songs and Witty Stories from the Heart Museum, are now streaming worldwide.
“She said she heard my music and was wondering what I wanted to do with it, and I said ‘Grammy.’ She said, ‘well, we need to talk.’ It’s new but sales are starting to show some potential. Mostly, it’s my lyrics that carry the show,” Burton said.
Burton, who was born in Los Angeles, bought his first guitar at age 30 and taught himself to play. At 31, he performed at a private party for legendary singer Cat Stevens. He also opened for Stevens Stills, formerly of Crosby Stills Nash and Young. Both encouraged him to pursue his music career. Burton said he also earned support and praise from Axl Rose, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Bill Graham.
Burton said landing a record deal after all these years is surreal. “I had these icons telling me that I had something, but the record industry was saying no, no, no. It was very frustrating to be told you’re before your time, but I kept my dream. I did not let them take away from my passion,” he said.
Burton describes his music as blue wave because it is a mix of blues and political statements. Other pieces have strong motivational and inspirational messages.
“My personal genre is that I’m a San Francisco street poet. The music that I do is so all over the place that I call it biorhythm and blues. The lyrics display a neuroplasticity and a creativity I’m excited to introduce to people 60 to 70 years old to remind them that all we have to do is to start dreaming again and our brain cells will start firing up and reproduce themselves. We don’t have to go quietly into the night,” Burton said.
In a 2011 article in Boom Magazine, Burton was described as a motivational minstrel. He was performing at Starbucks in Pleasant Valley Shopping Center in Raleigh at the time.
The overarching message in Burton’s music is: “Do not ever give up on your dreams. We have way more power than we allow ourselves to have, we have way more power than we allow ourselves to feel. We have limitless access to progress if we are willing to open up to each other and ourselves.”
Another honor Burton is proud of is being chosen by LinkedIn as an Ambassador of Goodwill for the Raleigh-Durham area. In addition to playing at local spots in Raleigh, Burton is active in the community. Working with Dennis Gaddy, executive director and founder of Community Success, Burton is the director of adult case management, and he works with at-risk youth. He’s also worked with ex-felons for 13 years.

Most of you have heard the story about how I bought a guitar at age 30 and went on to do some stuff which has blown my mind including being signed to a record deal at age 74, just two months ago!
While trolling YouTube seeking more information on the Human Brain-Mind Potential, and the Power of the Subconscious Mind as it is related to Neuro-plasticity. I listened again to one of my favorite original songs. ‘Sausalito Nell!’ written in about 1977 or 1978!
The last verse written in the late 70’s speaks to neuro-plasticity and I quote,
“We were sipping Psychadelics and reading the italics of the handwriting on the wall.
Before my eyes my life was flying, I was reading between the lines, and then I heard the call!
Like captain Fantastic, My mind became Elastic I was receiving meditation so strong.
Like Captain Terrific, I was deciphering Hieroglyphics and Rosetta Was I stone!”
To my amazement during that same time I wrote ‘Zen and the Tao of Jones.’
This song stated in the second chorus, (written before 1980),
“The Stock market’s Gonna Crash, Soon As the Robots get their checks Cashed.
The Government is gonna react soon as the ‘SOVIETS’ give our stats back!”

Most of you have already heard the story about how I learned to misuse the Creative Power of my Subconscious Mind at age 21 by embezzling $48,000 dollars from a saving and loan and visiting to Canada! I was sitting around waiting for my picture to show up in the USA news papers, and it had not for a year, so I thought that it was safe to get back into the water!
The most powerful driving force which you can have in any intention to create is what many teachers call, the Compelling Why! They tell me that that is the only thing which can inspire! My ‘Compelling Why’ was what I called ‘Internal Reparation!’ I rationalized my larcenous intent by convincing my Subconscious Mind Of Spirit aka ‘Inner Child’ that I needed to repay myself for that labor from my ancestors because no one else was intending to pay me. To make a long story longer, I truly felt that I had been wronged and needed to balance the karmic scales!
Well there are physical things which had to be done, but the most important aspects of this event was the mind set! As a present day expert on the Subconscious, I discovered in retrospect that I had to see myself deserving to have $48,000.00.
I then had to visualize, affirm, believe, Imagine and finally know that I deserved it! Which is a head game which my ego and my ‘Matrix’ driven Conscious Mind colluded to believe to be righteous! I literally began with the end in mind, suggested by Steven Covey!
Warning! The Subconscious Mind creates every circumstance or event in our lives, even so called accidents!
It also does not know the difference between the truth and that which is not truth! It will believe what your Ego driven Conscious mind tells it!
I believed, that since I was Black in America, and since my ancestors had been sold by other Africans into slavery, that America owed me 100% of my livelihood, for the repayment for the free labor which my ancestors did as slaves in America! I do not know why I did not decide that Africa owed me also! Hmmmmmmmmm! I added to those rationalizations that since I was the first to be stopped for potential traffic violations, since there were more people who looked liked me in US prisons than most other countries had in prison combined, that life had stacked the cards against me and that i had to deal from the bottom of the deck to rise up from the bottom of the Totem Pole in order to balance the laws of Karma!
By the time the Secret service and the FBI surrounded my home near Seattl I was almost 24. I owned at least 5 pieces of residential income property and the home I lived in! I also owned 5 vehicles, a top of the line motorcycle, two 1937 forest green Chevrolet sedans with suicide doors in showroom condition. You remember the gangster type with running boards, a 1967 Corvette Stingray, 427 cu.inch 425HP engine with Inglewood Slicks on the back and American Mag Wheels, Plus a pickup truck!
It was almost three years later that the Secret Service surrounded my house and took me downtown!
When they discovered that I had taken the cash at age 21, they said that they expected to find me at a strip club throwing hundred dollar bills at pretty women and here I was investing in Real estate!
After a short stay at ‘Camp Cupcake’ a wonderful thing happened. My former sister-in-law taught me Silva Mind Control! You may research the late Brain-Mind Guru ,Jose Silva. After learning to meditate, I realized that the laws of Karma were exact and began to practise meditation! I realized that we all reap what we sow. I discovered that thoughts were seeds, and when they were planted, they always grew! I realized that while some are astonished that their Karma seems so bad, never have they connected it to thoughts held in the mind which tend to produce after their own kind!
When I see people amazed that their bad luck has multiplied, I now have the answer! Thoughts held in the Mind produce after their own kind, even when those thoughts and fears are not based on truth!
So here is the way for you to create anything you desire!
#1. You Must Imagine that you deserve it! Visualize it. See it in your minds’eye!
#2. You must then believe that it already exists!
#3. You must Feel that you already have it! Affirm it until you feel it!
#4. You must then walk in the knowing that it is a done deal!
Imagine what people would be saying to you after you great accomplishment!
Before I got my hands on the first check in the embezzlement scam, I sent my subconscious mind a very powerful message!
I did this by checking into one the most luxurious hotels in the city, relinquishing my rented home due to being several months behind in rental payments!
When I walked into the bank to cash the first check, I had to walk like I was wealthy! I had to talk like I was wealthy. As a matter of fact, I called the Operations Manager of the bank two days prior to withdrawing the first amount to alert her that I was withdrawing a large sum of money from their bank as a courtesy call. I had studied what rich people do and how they act! This also works if you desire to change your life. You must act like honest people act! You must think like a wealthy person thinks! How successful would I have been in 1966 if I did not look like I was wealthy?
When I became an honest person and started to practice win/win business projects, I got a chance to be in the presence of people like Jack Canfield, Wayne Dyer, Toni Robbins, Depak Chopra, Les brown and Dr. Herbert Harris! When they started telling me about success principles, I soon realized that I was already using every aspect of their training except, to always enter into Win/Win business deals and always give more than you give. They said the extra mile is never crowded!

One year later William Burton was asked to play at a private gathering for none other that Cat Stevens aka Jusuf Islam! One song which burton chose to play was an original called ‘Reese The Priest’. Burton went on to open for the late great John lee Hooker after Muddy Waters gave him such high praise! Mr. Hooker was quoted as having said, “Son, the people like you!” When Burton asked how long he should play before John lee Hooker came out, after the first show, Mr. Hooker stated that William could perform for as long as he liked!
Burton went on to perform for the late great Bill Graham president of BPG, Bill Graham Presents! For Bill he opened for Steve Stills, formerly of Crosby Stills Nash and Young at the Fillmore West!
Burton was paid $5.00 per minute for the 45 minutes he was on stage in the early 80’s at the Fillmore. He was also allowed 17 guests in his dressing room, and was given 4 body guards and an unlimited bar tab for everyone in his dressing room until the sun came up!
Later in San Francisco, Axl Rose lead singer for Guns-N-Roses, heard William perform at the Palace Of Fine Arts, San Francisco,Ca. and gave WDB all of the money in his pocket when he heard William’s profound lyrics experienced his self confidence!
When asked if he did anything by Eric Clapton, Burton answered with, “I am a world class singer songwriter. When Eric does one of my songs, I will do one of his!” AXL’s response was, “Wow, you have enough balls to make in=t in the music industry!
Burton was practicing in a small room at hotel in San Jose when an assistant for Jack Canfield of “Chicken Soup For The Soul Enterprises and The Secret” happen to hear him play! A few minutes later, Jack canfield came down the hallway, to find his assistant who told Jack, “you gotta hear this guys music!” Within 15 minutes, Jack canfield had forged an agreement for William to perform that weekend for his training in exchange for Jack Canfield’s full training based on works by Dr. David Hawkins, “Power VS Force!”, Neville Goddard, Personal Growth Guru in the 50’s who’s training got to Rev. Ike, who built the largest congregation in Chicago and the first Soup Kitchen!
His most famous statement about prayer was “It is the feeling that get the blessings!” What rev Ike was saying was, when you believe, imagine, feel until you are certain that an event will occur, that event has already occurred. Just when you think North Raleigh is predictable, along comes William D. Burton. When you walk into the Starbucks at Pleasant Valley Promenade shopping center and see this older African American strumming a guitar, you expect, perhaps, blues (though he hardly looks the 63 he admits being! Instead you get a song like,”thoughts” with lyrics like “If you let your mind wander any way you please, soon your thoughts will wander yonder and pretty soon you’ll sneeze. If you let your mind ponder on what you think you need, mental garden you will plunder by producing Need Weed Seeds.” His songs delve into politics and relationships along the lines of Tracy Chapman- but with a with more wit and playfulness! Told that his music conjures up Chapman, Burton chuckled'”It’s not that angry!” he said! He ocasionally lapses into the motivational speaker that he is; his day job is an Empowerment coach” for Inspire,Inc. a North Raleigh- based coaching and training agency! But describing Burton as a motivational coach by night hardly begins to capture his life! It is filled with diverse accomplishments and anecdotes that are a little far out. He said that he has lectured at more than 15 universities, helped lead workshops with Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup For The Soul series & The Secret and opened for Muddy Waters on the road. He’ll tell you about being plucked from the parking lot of a Grateful Dead Concert on new Years Eve at the Oakland Coliseum to be the opening act for Steven Stills, formerly of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young or playing at a private party for now Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Cat Stevens aka Jusuf Islam! Burton Seems to get the biggest kick telling the tale of how some middle-aged couples were listening to his music recently at Starbucks when a group of kids came in.
